Pulling at the Strings of a Difficult History, German Volunteers Weave Hopeful Bonds

“I learned about the Shoah [the Holocaust] at a very young age. I can't even remember the first time I heard about it,” said 19-year-old Neele Ehlers, who grew up in Cottbus, Germany—a town about 12 miles from the eastern border with Poland. “The Shoah is so ingrained in our education, but it's something that’s very heavy and hard to deal with—especially when I think about how the people that did this were my ancestors.”

Looking into the Eyes That Looked into Hell: A Personal and Cultural Reckoning

As a native of Berlin, Enno Zschiedrich has been immersed in history his whole life. And not just any history; a precise history that is painful to remember, and dangerous to forget. Reckoning with this history is a central reason Enno came to Cincinnati, last September, as the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP) volunteer for Jewish Family Service’s Center for Holocaust Survivors.

Uniper Program Devices Connect Seniors in Cincinnati to Communities Around the Country

“I think without this program, a lot of people would be a lot lonelier,” said Stanley Slomovits over a recent Zoom call. Slomovits was talking about the Uniper Cares program, which connects seniors through live virtual programming. Seniors from around the country can connect through their TVs and mobile devices to a number of virtual peer-led groups. “I run a current events group where we talk about what’s going on in the news, and I lead an art appreciation group,” he explained.

Jewish Family Service Receives Funds for Holocaust Survivor Care: COVID-19 Pandemic Necessitates Extra Help

“Holocaust survivors are our teachers and our heroes,” said Mark Wilf, the chair of The Jewish Federations of North America’s (JFNA) board of trustees. “With inspiring strength and conviction, they teach us about the past. Now, they are teaching us how to better serve all older adults who have survived trauma.” JFNA’s Center on Aging and Trauma, a project of the Holocaust Survivor Initiative, has just awarded Jewish Family Service a one-year, $66,666 grant.

Program Helps Survivors Realize Learning Never Ends

A beautiful vision was not only realized but exceeded recently when 92 Holocaust survivors graduated from a program that brought the world to their doorstep through the use of technology. Now confident iPad users, these graduates can video chat with distant family members; take photos; send emails; listen to music from their youth; watch movies, read books or check the news in their native language; or simply search the internet. The project’s official name: Tablets and Technology:...

Holocaust Survivors' Staff Goes to Washington

In late September, staff members of the Jewish Family Service Center for Holocaust Survivors travelled from Cincinnati to Washington, D.C., to attend an important workshop sponsored by Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA).
