Silverman is a rabbi, author, teacher, activist and founder of Second Nurture: Every Child Deserves a Family – And a Community, which is a program to find permanent, loving families for all children with the added bonus of supportive communal contexts for their families. She is the author of “Jewish Family & Life: Traditions, Holiday and Values for Today’s Parents and Children” and “Casting Lots: Creating a Family in a Beautiful Broken World”.
She has appeared with her sister, comedian Sarah Silverman, on ABC’s The View, and has also been featured in New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Jerusalem Post, The Forward, Tablet Magazine, Moment Magazine, NPR, among others. She lives with her spouse, Yosef Abramowitz, and five children in Jerusalem.
Silverman describes her family, which she built through birth and Ethiopian adoption, as a metaphor for the world’s contradictions and complexities – a microcosm of tragedy and joy, hope and despair, and predictability and absurdity of the world we live in. With humor, she will share her experiences of her imperfect, but loving, household to help turn parental fears and anxieties into kindness and generosity.
